Oversized images are the single most common cause of slow web pages. A modern phone camera happily produces a five megabyte photograph, and dropping that straight into a site, an email or a document viewer punishes everyone on a slower connection. The Toolers Image Compressor re-encodes pictures in the browser so the file gets dramatically smaller while the visible quality stays acceptable.
Compression works by discarding information the eye is least sensitive to and by storing what remains more efficiently. Photographs tolerate this well, which is why a JPEG at eighty percent quality often looks identical to the original at a fraction of the size. Flat graphics with sharp edges tolerate it less well, and that difference is worth knowing before you choose a setting.
Choosing a quality level
Start around seventy to eighty percent and compare against the original at full zoom. If you see soft blocks around high-contrast edges or banding in a gradient sky, ease the quality back up. Resizing before compressing usually helps more than aggressive quality reduction: an image displayed at 800 pixels wide gains nothing from being stored at 4000 pixels wide, and halving the dimensions cuts the pixel count to a quarter.
